Education sector transformation critical

07 Mar 2019

In order to achieve the goal of transforming Botswana into a high income country, the education sector has to transform from resource-based into knowledge-based.

This was said by Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) chief executive officer Dr Raphael Dingalo at a stakeholder’s dinner in Francistown on March 6.

Dr Dingalo said one of HRDC’s critical undertakings was to develop the national human development plan describing human capital as a thread running across all sectors of learning.

“Human capital development is a thread that runs across from primary, secondary, tertiary including lifelong learning,” he said.

Human capital development, he said, should entail a multi-sectoral approach if the country was to reap fruits from it.

“That is why we (as HRDC) saw the need to host this national human capital development fair and career clinics,” he said.

He said the fair started in Gaborone and because of interest, was extended to Francistown and would also cover the north west region.

Dr Dingalo explained that the whole idea was to galvanize all stakeholders to participate and shape the destiny of the students who would in turn shape the country and grow the economy in order to deal with the issue of unemployment.

“We are calling on all critical stakeholders to play their part in dealing with the issue of employment creation because government alone cannot afford to grow the economy,” he said.

He said HRDC would soon  be developing its national human development plan which would address all the challenges that related to poor performance in schools.

“Every time when examinations are released, there is always an outcry of poor performance in schools and through the plan we will address all these challenges,” he said.

The HRDC chief appealed to the organisation’s critical stakeholders and all sectors to support President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s vision in order to shape the destiny of the country.

In his welcome remarks, Francistown deputy mayor Mr Godisang Radisigo applauded HRDC for being the front-runner in the development of human capital.

He challenged the youth to be job creators and not job seekers saying as young entrepreneurs they should also penetrate the international markets.

,The dinner was preceded by a skills and career clinic which was running for the 10th year. Ends
