Dyer Tribe mesmerises fans
14 Aug 2013
August 9 saw the crowds who had gathered to listen to the Dyer Tribe glued to their chairs mesmerised as they listened to the maily instrumental smooth jazz sounds of the two musicians.
The mood at the show can be best described as mellow, and attracted a crowd of more mature jazz lovers.
The fourth Mascom Live Session cannot be compared to the more successful and very lively shows such as Freshlyground, Soweto String Quartet and a collaboration show between Swedish and Batswana artists.
Meanwhile, Steve Dyer is a very talented, award winning composer and performer.
Steve and his son, Bokani, who go under the name the ‘Dyer Tribe’ from South Africa performed alongside renowned local jazz maestro, Lister Boleseng.
Steve Dyer has directed and performed with the first ever substantive Southern African music collaboration, ‘Mahube’ in 1997.
Steve also lived in Botswana in the 1980s when he formed the band ‘Shakawe’ with Jonas Gwangwa and a host of local artists at the same time that Hugh Masekela was playing with Kalahari.
Lister Boleseng is Botswana’s leading tenor saxophone player.
He played alongside Andrew Chinganga from Zimbabwe on alto sax, ‘Gee’ Gomotsegang Rapoo, a legend with the lead guitar, Sakkie Nonong, the deep bass man and Gavin Bantam on piano.
Bokani Dyer, who was born in Gaborone in 1986, has being playing music his whole life.
Bokani, who graduated from the University of Cape Town, has collaborated with artists like Sibongile Khumalo, Jason Yarde, Simphilwe Dana, Soweto Kinch, Thandiswa Mazwai, Jimmy Dludlu, Steve Dyer, Melanie Scholttz, and Moreira Chonguica along with many others! ENDS
