Residents appreciate connection to grid

30 Jan 2019

Residents of Mogome and Radisele in the Serowe South Constituency have commended government for introducing the P10 million constituency development fund.

Speaking during a kgotla meetings at Radisele and Mogome addressed by the area Member of Parliament, Ms Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, the Village Development Committee (VDCs) chairpersons, Ms Peggy Kebaneetse of Radisele and Ms Florence Keitumetse of Mogome indicated that their villages benefitted P1 million each from the constituency development fund.

Each ward in the Serowe South constituency benefitted P1 million.

They indicated that through the funds, they managed to purchase transformers valued at P250 000 a unit and now wards that were without electricity were connected to the grid.

They also said that they had extended the two-roomed VDC houses to add kitchens, sitting rooms and two bedrooms.

Ms Kebaneetse stated that two toilet blocks had been constructed at the village primary school, adding that the funds also allowed them to pave the road leading to a junior secondary school as well as set up four bus stop shades along the A1 road.

The Poverty Eradication Programme was said to have benefitted residents of both villages with those engaged in livestock rearing progressing well.

However, there was a concern that backyard garden projects had collapsed due to shortage of water.

The two representatives decried shortage of accommodation for civil servants.

They requested government to increase the number of police officers in their respective villages and for transport to be availed to fight crime. Other requests included upgrading of health posts for both villages to clinics and renovation of schools.

Villagers complained about the quality of water, saying it had a reddish colour.

They said the problem could be a result of the old water pipeline which needed to be changed.

For her part, Ms Venson-Moitoi thanked residents for their support in the 15 years she served as their Member of Parliament.

She said they worked as a team to bring developments and improve livelihoods.

She said though she was retiring from being MP, she would remain active in politics and would continue to serve her community. ENDs
