Trainer doles out strategy formulation advice

30 Jan 2019

Performance improvement coordinators (PICs) have been advised to come up with results orientated strategies.

Facilitating a capacity building workshop for PICs in Mahalapye on Monday,  Mr James Joseph, a consultant and trainer, said a good strategy must clearly communicate with both internal and external customers.

The PICs learnt that strategies must also be aligned to departmental mandates.

Mr Joseph said well-defined plans of action stimulated performance of individual employees and ultimately overall effectiveness and quality service delivery by an organisation.

“A strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory and tactics without strategy are the noise before defeat,” he said.

Mr Joseph urged the PICs to align their thinking to that of people in the business sector saying the business environment encouraged employees to continually focus on bettering their service or product..

For an organisation to be successful, he said, the management should have thorough knowledge and analysis of the general and competitive environment.

“Leaders are born; you can not train someone to be a good leader.

You can not teach a diamond how to shine. Observe children even as they play, a leader will always display leadership qualities even at such a tender age,” he said.

He said leaders needed strategic management to guide an organisation into the desired direction.

Through strategic management, an organisation would be in a position to manage employees, minimise costs and ultimately achieve the desired objectives, added Mr Joseph.

He further said the leadership of an organisation must be exemplary and promote “the do as I do mentality not do as I say mentality,” saying by so doing they guided their employees.

For his part, coordinator of public reforms, Dr Omponye Coach Kereteletswe said he was hopeful that the PICs would be fully equipped to positively contribute to improving reforms coordination.

Dr Kereteletswe said senior management such as permanent secretaries must also be engaged on strategic management in order to improve ministerial performance and effectively guide ministries towards achieving their mandates. ENDS
