Clubs key to road safety

27 Jan 2019

Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) injury preventions manager, Mr Tlhabano Mmusi, has implored schools road safety clubs to promote a culture of road safety through first  aid awareness, walks, debates and commemoration of road safety days, among other things.

Speaking at the schools road safety clubs capacity building workshop in Letlhakeng recently, Mr Mmusi said such activities would keep alive messages on the importance of road safety.

He said such activities could only be successful if schools partnered with stakeholders such as the police, the Department of Road Transport and Safety, clinics and emergency medical services providers.

“As the MVA Fund we also assist school clubs through an annual funding of P5 000 per school for major activities, so you must liaise with us if in need of assistance because we are a very interested party on roads safety and awareness,” he said.

Mphuthe Junior Secondary School club patron, Ms Baitumetse Samapipi, said the clubs were the brainchild of Botswana Social Studies Association (BOSSA) in conjunction with MVA Fund, and that the two organs wanted avenues of instilling road safety messages to students, hence formation of the clubs.

She said as the highest school in the village, they decided to also take along the two primary schools in the village with the aim of working together for a common cause of reducing road accidents on students.

She said this was also in line with the Department of Road Transport and Safety’s objective of accidents free roads by 2036. ENDS
