Botswana Geoscience Institute investigates Selebi Phikwe tremors
22 Jan 2019
Following recent suspected earth tremors that occurred in Selebi Phikwe, Botswana Geo-Science Institute yesterday dispatched a team of experts to undertake an assessment in the affected area.
The institute’s public relations manager, Mr James Molosankwe said in an interview that their organisation treated the occurrences with the seriousness they deserved hence the assessment.
He said even though none of the institute’s 21 Seismicity Monitoring Stations, which were strategically placed around the country, recorded any tremor in that area, it was still important for investigations to be carried out to establish what had transpired.
Further, Mr Molosankwe said the team would also conduct interviews with people residing in the area.
He said information on the matter would be given once the assessment has been completed.
Selebi Phikwe East MP Mr Nonofo Molefhi was equally concerned about the recent tremors in his constituency.
He suspected that the tremors were from the closed BCL mine hence investigations needed to be done to establish what could have triggered them.
However, BCL liquidator, Mr Nigel Dixon-Warren denied allegations that the tremors were from the mine as he too carried out his own investigations and found nothing.
He said he was aware of the recent tremors but they were not from the BCL mine as the mine was closed and as such no production was taking place.
Mr Dixon-Warren said he even went further to check if there was an ongoing exercise at the nearby Botswana Defence Force (BDF) camp but there was none. ENDS
