27 Nov 2018

Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) member says Batswana are banking on Parwe Junior Secondary School to produce frontball team that will represent the country at the Olympics.

Tebo Segaise, who was officiating at the launch of frontball at the school in Mahalapye recently, said the school had made history by becoming pioneers of frontball since the sport was new and still finding its way in Africa.

“Front ball is a new sporting code whereby players hit a ball against a wall, earning a point whenever their opponent fails to hit it back after a single bounce and the only equipment required is a leather-covered rubber ball,” she said.

She said BNOC was committed to support the school for the sport to succeed.

Segaise said frontball was played at the last Olympic Games

While schools were marred with violent behaviour, she said the new sport code could instill positive behavious among the students.

Meanwhile, Segaise said youth participation in sport not only benefits them physically but teaches them values of life.

She highlighted that the Olympic movement values encouraged young people to be respectful, tolerant of one another, excel both on the play field, academically and encouraged fair play.

School head, Bashi Garebaitse said he was pleased that frontball was launched at the school

“Front ball is a new sport for children, students and parents. It is easy to play and requires little space. Therefore, as a school head, I feel privileged to have been approached by BNOC to pioneer the new sport code,” he said.

Garebaitse encouraged students to take the opportunity seriously as it could be a life changing experience, which could afford them a place in the Olympic team. ENDS
