Makhwengwe GU head coach

10 Oct 2018

Gaborone United (GU) have appointed Philemon Makhwengwe for a second spell as their head coach.

Makhwengwe, who won the Coca Cola Cup during his brief spell as GU head coach between May and August 2012, takes over from interim coach and club legend Stephen Maposa, who has been holding fort after the departure of popular Argentine coach, Rodolfo Zapata in April.

GU announced the appointment on Tuesday, stating that the former Prisons XI coach was taking over with immediate effect.

Makhwengwe arrives at the Reds with the team not doing well and languishing in an unfamiliar position 15 on the log standings with three points.

After playing seven matches, GU which won the top flight title three times in 1986, 1990 and 2009, have recorded a single victory, three draws and three defeats.

Three of their points were however chalked off after the club missed a deadline imposed by FIFA for payment of a settlement to their former striker Bismarck Appiah.

Contacted for comment on the duration of the contract, GU chairperson Boitumelo Nsunge said they were discussing the finer details of the contract with the coach.

“It is true we have appointed him, but we are still negotiating the terms of the contract with him. It will be a performance based contract. We hope to conclude the negotiations by the end of this week,” Nsunge said.

Makhwengwe’s first match since his re-appointment will be a home fixture against his former team Prisons XI at UB Stadium on Sunday, 21 October. ENDS
