Maun police arrest suspected serial rapist

Maun Police have arrested a 47-year-old man of Boronyane ward in Maun who is suspected to have committed multiple rape.

District No. 5 deputy officer commanding, Superintendent John Kelebeng confirmed that the suspect was arrested on September 02 in connection with four rape cases.

Supt Kelebeng however indicated that the number of cases linked to the suspect may rise as the police investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the suspect, Maithamako Koogomotse was arraigned before Maun Magistrate Jobbie Gaosikelwe on September 4 for two of the rape cases.

On count one, the charge sheet stated that the accused unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the complainant on August 31, 2018 at Shashe ward in Maun.

It is said the complainant left her home to worship by river and on her way, the complainant lost direction to the river and met the accused person whom he asked for directions.

The court heard that while walking, the accused grabbed the complainant by the neck and threw her to the ground and ordered her to undress and had unconsented sex with her without using a condom.

On the second count the accused unlawfully had carnal knowledge of another complainant on August 23, 2018. 

The complainant is said to have met with the accused on her way from home at Moeti ward enroute to her workplace.

The court heard that the accused enquired about vacant positions at the complainant’s workplace and   the complainant said she was not aware of any.

However, the complainant continued with her journey only for the accused person to grab her by the neck from the back, tripped her and ordered her to undress and had unconsented sex with her without a condom.

The suspect will appear again for mention before Maun Magistrate Court on September 18. 

Meanwhile, Maun police are investigating a suicide incident in which a 26-year-old man of Boseja ward in Maun was found hanging by the rafters.

Superintendent Kelebeng said the deceased who used a wire to hang himself was discovered in his bedroom by his elder brother on Monday September, 03 at around 10 am and said the deceased did not leave any message.

He encouraged people to always share their challenges with loved ones to avoid taking their lives. 

He further said the police were on a manhunt of a suspect in Sepopa, who was alleged to have defiled a 15-year-old Popagano Junior Secondary School student whom he was reported to have been sexually abusing since she was 10 years old.

 He said the incident was reported after the complainant’s mother questioned her daughter about her habit of spending a night outside their home.

Supt Kelebeng said the mother later learnt that the suspect who is the related to the victim had been sexually abusing the minor since she was 10 years old. Ends
