Residents conserve heritage sites

30 Jul 2013

Magapatona and Goshwe in the Tutume Sub district have identified and classified cultural heritage sites, stone wall ruins, ant hills and valleys in effort to conserve culture and natural sites.

In an interview, the chairperson of Mago Conservation Trust, Matante Moseki said they have identified natural and man-made heritage sites in the eastern side of Goshwe.

The preservation of such sites would help people trace their history and lost pieces of the past, and interested parties could also help in documenting the information for reference purposes.

He said they identified the cultural sites to develop tourism in the area and create employment to the community.

Moseki said the trust has been registered and they have also established a cultural and craft centre, which would be used by artists to exhibit their products.

“Still on the cultural centre, we will also have a gallery for artifacts exhibition and cultural homesteads where food would be prepared and served. They will also provide accommodation for customers,” he said.

Moseki noted that they also want to conserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage as well to raise awareness of the importance of heritage. The trust also intends having an indigenous knowledge system. ENDS
