Police nab car thieves
21 Aug 2018
Police in Letlhakeng have arrested two men in connection with the theft of a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to Water Utilities Corporation which was stolen in the early hours of Monday (August 20).
In an interview, Superintendent Daniel Katse said the men, aged 33 and 39, are alleged to have attacked and injured three security guards who were on duty at the premises, before tying them up and taking away in the vehicle at around 0130 hours.
He said fortunately one of the security guards managed to untangle himself and untied others before they reported the incident to the police around 2am.
“We quickly alerted other police stations such as Kanye and Moshupa to be on the lookout and the vehicle was identified by Moshupa police officers who were on patrol. They managed to chase the vehicle up to Kanye where unfortunately one of the suspects escaped,” he said.
Supt. Katse said the escaped perpetrator, alleged to be the mastermind of the whole incident was however, known and they were confident of his arrest soon.
On whether suspects could be linked to recent incidents where two government Toyota Land Cruisers were stolen in Letlhakeng and Kanye, Supt. Katse said they could not yet confirm that as they had just made the arrest.
“We are still early in our investigations and the suspects are likely to appear for mention at the Molepolole magistrate court on Thursday (August 23),” he said.
He also said suspects appeared to be an organised syndicate as they seemed to have taken their time to spot and monitor police patrols around the village before striking.
Supt. Katse said the three security guards only suffered minor injuries. ENDS
