Residents appreciate awareness efforts

Residents of Takatokwane in the Kweneng district have appreciated efforts by Journey of Hope Botswana in equipping them with information about breast cancer.

Speaking during the breast cancer awareness and screening courtesy of Journey of Hope Botswana recently, one of the residents, Ms Gabantshole Gakebogape said she had little knowledge about breast cancer.

Ms Gakebogape who has been equipped with information and skill to even teach other villagers thanked Journey of Hope for the invaluable information which she said would come in handy.

“With the information gained, I will be able to examine myself and visit health facilities if there is something unusual about my breasts,” she said.

She emphasised that it was important for those in remote areas to be taught on health issues such as a routine check.

When speaking about breast cancer awareness, Journey of Hope Botswana volunteer, Ms Onica Lekuntwane said most cases of Breast Cancer were found in women, adding that some signs to check for included a lump that may not be seen, but might be felt.

She said the skin texture may be puckering noting that other signs maybe a nipple discharge and rash on the breast.

She advised that the earlier Breast Cancer was detected, the better chance of beating the disease.

“It is important for women to develop the habit to touch, look and check their breasts regularly for any unusual change,” she said.

She said Journey of Hope Botswana was a charity organisation which aimed at educating Batswana about breast cancer and promoting early detection.

She further revealed that those that may show signs of Breast Cancer would be assisted by the organisation to see a specialist at Bokamoso Private Hospital.

“Should there be signs of breast cancer they will be referred to Princess Marina Hospital for further assistance,” she said.

More than a hundred women were examined by Journey of Hope Botswana specialist to check signs of Breast Cancer at Takatokwane clinic before the ladies with pink scooters proceeded to Letlhakeng clinic where several women we also screening to detect signs of Breast Cancer. ENDS
