- The prosecutor in the Block 3 murder case in which a woman was murdered and her headless body dumped in Tlokweng has pleaded with the Extension 2 Magistrate Court to further remand the accused in custody as the search for the deceased’s head had not yet borne fruit.
Appearing before Magistrate Batho Kgerethwa yesterday, Ms Thato Dibeela from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), said while the deceased had since been buried, investigators were still following some leads to the recovery of the late Elizabeth Kerekang’s head.
Ms Dibeela added that investigations had also indicated that there were two more people who were linked to the matter who investigators still had to locate and arrest.
Furthermore, she told the court that the prosecution was still awaiting results on some of the items that were recovered from the accused’s home which had been sent to the national forensic laboratory for comparison with the samples that had been taken from Kerekang’s body.
She added that they were still awaiting the results of the postmortem that was performed on the deceased’s body. Ms Dibeela said it was for these reasons that the prosecution wanted the accused to be further remanded in custody to allow the investigators to deal with all pending issues pertaining to the matter.
The accused, Simon Kgowe’s attorney, Mr Gosiame Digangwa said while the defence did not object to the further detention of the accused, it was their plea that the outstanding investigations be expedited so that the issue of bail could be dealt with.
On a different note, he informed the court that Kgowe had been taken for medical attention following the court’s ruling during his previous appearance.
Mr Digangwa however pleaded with the court to order the police to furnish the accused with his medical report, as they had refused to do so after Kgowe was seen by a medical practitioner.
After hearing both parties, Magistrate Kgerethwa ordered the police to release the accused’s medical report. She then set August 30 as the next date of mention.
According to information before court, Kgowe allegedly murdered Kerekang on July 30 in Block 3 in Gaborone by cutting off her head.
Kerekang’s headless body was later recovered in Maratanang ward in Tlokweng..ENDS
