Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) occur more commonly than any other category of infection.
With an aim to combat new infections, Bobirwa District Health Management Team went on a mission to distribute condoms at Bobonong mall every Friday.
Speaking in an interview, the health education officer, Ms Tshepho Mokhutshwane said their mission was purported by increased new STIs and teenage pregnancy in Bobonong.
“Most commonly diagnosed diseases from the infections included HIV, syphilis and gonorrhea,” she said.
She said that taking their services closer to people was based on their efforts and mission of recording zero new infection in some years to come.
Ms Mokhutshwane explained that it was crucial for people to gain control of the epidemic, more especially at an individual level.
“Both male and female have an opportunity to acquire condoms,” she explained.
She said that people have welcomed the initiative, as 384 condoms were distributed on a daily basis. For her part, Bobonong resident, Ms Sefelepelo Goitsemang welcomed the initiative with open hands, adding that it was a life saviour.
She said the initiative saved time and costs of travelling to health facilities to collect condoms. Ms Goitsemang explained that with the initiative in place, cases of unplanned pregnancies and STI’s would go down in Bobonong. ENDS
