Youth programmes beneficial to community

14 Aug 2018

Kgosi Moatlhodi Kgwakgwe of Digawana has appealed to his community to engage in youth tailored programmes because they were full of benefits.

Speaking at a Wellness and Fitness Day event organised by the Good Hope Sub-district’s Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture Development office in Digawana, Kgosi Kgwakgwe praised the team for seeing it fit to hold the event in his village .

He said exercising was good for one’s body as it kept the body strong and healthy and further highlighted the importance of nutrition in health, stating that there were certain foods whose consumption should be minimised such as those high in fat.

Kgosi Kgwakgwe urged the community to form a youth committee that would extend to places such as Gopong to develop programmes that the youth could participate in to refrain from simply staying at home with nothing to do.

Councillor for Digawana, Mr Daniel Motlhabankwe thanked the office for starting the wellness day activities in Digawana, recognising the importance of fitness in society through sport.

Mr Motlhabankwe called on the youth to participate in programmes such as constituency competitions and called for the spirit of cooperation and unity between departments especially at district level.

The head of youth department in the sub district, Ms Bagele Masimole expressed concern about health challenges that arose mainly due to people’s lifestyles.

She said there were incidences where young people were attacked by illnesses such as stroke, which could be prevented by exercising, emphasising that programmes such as the fitness day were important for minimising illnesses and developing healthier communities.

Ms Masimole commended the youth of Digawana for being active in sports and arts competitions and further commended Kgosi Kgwakgwe for being active in the programmes, stating that Digawana was blessed to have such an ‘exemplary leader’.

She urged the community to encourage students, out-of-school youth and elders to exercise.

She expressed her wish that the Digawana community could continue with the fitness programme on their own and call on others to join in to make it a common event. The activities for the day included aerobics, football and volleyball games among others. ENDS
