Commission readies for national registration
02 Aug 2018
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has started readying itself for registration for next year’s general elections.
The registration is billed to start from September 3 to November 11 for those eligible to vote in the 2019 general elections.
The extended registration is largely due to the amendment of the Electoral Act, which deleted a section providing for supplementary and continuous registration of voters.
An official from the South East IEC office, Mr Carthage Modisane told the Party Liaison Committee (PLC) meeting recently that preparations for the registration exercise had begun.
He said the commission had already started with the recruitment of staff for its Tlokweng and Ramotswa constituencies.
Furthermore, Mr Modisane said they had started sensitising the public about the election registration exercise, adding that they had already met various stakeholders in Tlokweng and they were in the process of meeting stakeholders in Ramotswa.
Among those targeted in Ramotswa are tribal leadership, ministers fraternal, youth, men sector, women and students from Moeding senior and St Joseph College as some of them will be eligible to vote during the coming elections.
Mr Modisane stated that during the previous quarter, they addressed primary and junior secondary schools as some of the schools had requested the IEC office to address students, adding that it was commendable as it madre their work easy as schools prescribed material that the commission had to share with students.
He said they also addressed youth business community and political parties’ women’s wings representatives.
He said during their previous engagement the men were very thankful as for a very long time, they had felt marginalised.
He said the commission would continue to schedule separate meetings for men, adding that they were usually selected from different wards in the village. ENDS
