Four men who are accused of the rape and murder of  Kenanao Leduma that took place in Jwaneng on or about June 24, this year, have pleaded with the investigating team to hasten their investigations on the matter because they (accused) cannot stand the harsh conditions in prison.

Boemo Baaitse (24) of Kanye, Pako Segogwane (29) of Letlhakane East, Thuto Sugwasugwane (24) also from Letlhakane East and 29-year-old Tshepo Molwalefe from Kanye made their second court appearance last Wednesday.

The prosecutor Sub-Inspector Edwin Supang made an application for the remand warrant of the accused persons to be extended to allow for uninterrupted continuation of investigations.

He said the investigating team was to record statements from potential witnesses some of whom are as far as Ghanzi, while exhibits have been sent to the laboratory for examinations.

He promised that the team was working round the clock to complete the investigations, though the matter was complex because the crime was committed during the Toyota 1000km Desert Race, where there were a lot of people.

The four accused persons asked the prosecution to expedite the investigations because they were innocent and also decried the harsh conditions in prison, which they said were not good for their health.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Odirile Mokgatle said though the accused were presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law, it should be noted that prison was never meant to be a bed of roses.

“This matter is relatively new before court and its seriousness cannot be over emphasised.

A life has been lost and members of the community who have interest in the case should also be afforded time to calm down. Your safety at this juncture as accused persons should also be considered,” he said.

The court further ordered that the investigating officer be availed to update court on the progress of the investigations. The four accused were remanded in custody and they will appear again on August 6. ENDS
