Churches have been praised for moulding the nation as well as for praying for the country’s leadership.

The praise came from Mr Ronald Mokgothu, secretary to Kanye South MP, Mr Abram Kesupile during the official opening of the New Apostolic Church in Zion Church in Kanye recently.

He was speaking on behalf of his boss who could not make it to the event.

Expressing concern about rising crime in Botswana such as drug and alcohol abuse, stock theft, passion killings and murder, Mr Mokgothu called on pastors to pray and preach the word of God daily to rescue the nation.

He also called all churches to pray for the country’s leadership including tribal leaders, adding that the country should be given first priority in prayer to maintain the spirit of togetherness, consultation and the reigning peace and stability.

The church’s leader, Bishop Mosimanewakgotla Samaribela said local churches had been exemplary in partnering with government in areas such as spiritual growth, education, health and social welfare,

Bishop Samaribela said it was by God’s grace that the church, located at Kanye’s Gakgolo Ward had at long last been officially opened.

He said they encountered many problems including financial constraints and lack of cooperation among members which prevented the church from opening last year.

He thanked God and the Department of Water Affairs who assisted them during the process of acquiring the plot and some of old buildings.

The church occupies a plot vacated by the department.

The bishop informed the audience that the church started at Zeerust near Dinokaneng, South Africa in 1962 and was registered in Botswana in 1999.

He said Kanye tribal authorities forced them out of the village a long time back accusing them of practising witchcraft.

He expressed appreciation that they were now recognised in Botswana and were even allowed to join church associations. ENDS
