Kgosi Kgaswa wants holding facility

22 Jul 2018

Kgosi Letsogo Kgaswa of Nata has requested a rehabilitation or holding facility for remand prisoners attending cases at Nata Magistrate Court.

Kgosi Kgaswa made the request when briefing Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Machana Shamukuni during a kgotla meeting last week.

He said remanded prisoners were transported by road daily from Francistown and Maun to attend cases in Nata, which he said sometimes caused delays as the prisoners would be given time to rest prior to attending court.

He said it was also dangerous for the officers who had to travel long distances with sometimes dangerous prisoners.

Kgosi Kgaswa said the facility could be built at the police station plot, which was allocated about seven years ago, to curb incidents which may occur in the process of transporting prisoners to and from court.

On other issues, kgosi requested an assistant tribal secretary who will be based in Nata kgotla, as it served many villages.

He said the current arrangement was that they were assisted by the tribal secretary in Tutume, which affected service delivery.

Mr Shamukuni promised to take up the request with his counterparts at Cabinet.

Meanwhile, the assistant minister urged residents to register their relatives living with disability for them to benefit from available programmes.

He revealed that government was in the process of amending the disability policy to align it with international standards so that every structure could be accessed by people with diability. ENDS
