Clubs use cars to build healthy minds

25 Jul 2013

A convoy of different models of BMW cars slithers through Serowe village.

Some on-lookers stare in admiration while some are probably wondering what the show off is about. In no time, the cars are parked neatly in a row in front of the yard at a wedding.

Some of the drivers then engage in random chats with the admirers while some sit on the cars of their bonnets, chatting animatedly amongst themselves. In no time, they take off to yet another escapade. While some clubs have been formed for fun, Serowe BMW Social Club and VW/Audi Central Club are more than a social clubs.

What started as the love for cars for the duo, Messrs Tshepo Mogorosi and Atlarelang Rammapudi was soon conceptualised into a meaningful concept meant to help the needy and people living with disability as well as playing a role in the sensitisation drive of alcohol abuse campaigns.

The public relations officer for Serowe BMW Social Club, Mr Rammapudi said they found it fit to use cars to build healthy minds, provide entertainment locally and outside the country, encourage and nurture talent as well as to take part in poverty eradication initiatives.

Already, he said their club which was formed in January had been engaged in other activities such as donating some money to Miscellaneous Football Club and they also engaged in volleyball games with other local clubs.

Engaging in sport, he said, helped young people refrain from engaging in substance and alcohol abuse and improve wellness.VW/Audi Central Club spokesperson, Mr Mogorosi said the club members wanted to live by their club’s motto ‘Making the difference’ by playing a meaningful role in the lives of the community. He further pointed out that they also intend to take part in poverty eradication initiatives, provide financial assistance and mechanical advice to the club members

Mr Mogorosi also pleaded with Batswana not to associate them with immoral activities bedevilling the society. “People have wrong perception about car clubs and they think they are formed to indulge in alcohol, race and spinning,” he said.

Asked why they formed their club with two different models, he said the two (VW and Audi) were more or less the same. He said all were welcome to become members of the club regardless of their model of cars.“A club member is required to pay a joining fee of P50.’

He said becoming a member was beneficial since members were offered free monthly engine diagnosis. In addition, he said the members were provided free transport to any activity they would be attending such as weddings, parties among others.  ENDS
