Water tanks to alleviate water crisis
04 Jul 2018
The Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration Mr Machana Shamukuni has handed over five water tanks to residents of Flowertown in Kazungula.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony on July 3, Mr Shamukuni, who is also Chobe MP, said lack of water in Flowertown was of great concern hence the leadership approached the business community to assist with the water tanks.
He pointed out that Kazungula started as a small village depending on the Kasane Water Plant but grew at an alarming rate leading to the need for another water plant, which had also proved inadequate to meet demand.
Mr Shamukuni said the tanks would assist while awaiting the expansion of the water plant.
The assistant minister explained that government approved the expansion of the water plant in 2016 but the project was delayed due to complaints raised by bidders.
He appealed to the community to take care of the water tanks and use water only for household chores and not for construction purposes.
Mr Shamukuni thanked the business community for donating the 5 000 and 10 000 litres tanks.
In his welcome remarks, Kazungula’s Kgosi Morgan Makhanga expressed appreciation for the gesture saying they would assist in addressing the water crisis in Newstance/Flowertown.
Water Utilities Corporation official Mr Boitumelo Legwaila said once the community had agreed on the location of the tanks, the corporation would ensure they were always filled in order to avoid people thaving to ravel long distances for drinking water. ENDS
