A society that has loving and caring members, who take care of those who are in need is important, hence the formation of social clubs.

One such is Molepolole-based Letlapa Social Club, which was formed 15 years ago to care for and assist the less privileged as well as carry out community engagement activities.

The objective of the club is said to be to promote recreation through sporting activities for the youth, as well as to promote the spirit of self-reliance through implementation of community development initiatives.

Speaking in an interview with BOPA on Sunday, the chairperson of the club, Mr Israel Mogonono said currently, the club has a four-year strategy, which includes embarking on

Road Safety campaigns within the Kweneng region targeting donkey carts.

Mr Mogonono said during the campaigns, the public is educated on the importance of visibility on roads, they are issued with reflector vests, while reflector tapes are installed on donkey carts.

He said this year, the club added another project in collaboration with the Department of Social & Community Development of the Kweneng District Council to identify a needy person for whom to build a house.

Mr Mogonono noted that the project was started on June 9, 2018 and the intention is to hand it over before the end of June 2019.

He further said the club is raising funds, through membership subscriptions and fundraising events, something which brings about challenges because most of the club members are unemployed and therefore are unable to contribute to the club’s initiatives.

He however said it was pleasing because members are willing to sacrifice the little they have to see the project to completion.

He pleaded with members of the business community to assist with any form of sponsorship towards completion of the project, so that the family of 21 people will have a shelter.

Mr Mogonono said the club has a membership of about 85. ENDS
