Public officers clean for charity

03 Jul 2018

Public officers from different departments in Francistown spent the morning of Friday June 29 cleaning Lephoi Centre for the Blind during a community service day organised by the Francistown Office of the District Commissioner (DC).

The activities of the day included cutting grass, doing laundry for learners, cleaning their rooms and watering plants in the area.

In an interview, the vice chairperson of the Wellness Committee from the office of the DC in Francistown, Mr Thapelo Maripe said they identified Lephoi Centre through their committee and contacted its management to find out what help they could offer to the centre.

He said the management welcomed them with open hands and showed them around the school, where the committee decided that they would help by tidying up the place.

Mr Maripe added that they chose cleaning because they realised that much cleaning was needed, especially at laundry, playing grounds and kitchen.

He thanked other government departments who showed interest by leaving their day to day duties to come and help clean the centre.

The Office of the Ombudsman, Central Transport Organization and Tribal Administration also donated toiletry to the centre, including washing powder to be used during cleaning and at the laundry.

For her part, the assistant matron for Lephoi Centre Ms Virginia Mhlabano thanked the Office of the DC for organising a community service day to help in cleaning the centre.

She said it would help a lot because they experienced shortage of staff so there was a lot of work at the laundry, kitchen and garden, adding that their doors were open for anyone who wanted to offer help.

Ms Mhlabano said their centre was for charity, therefore they also depended on donations and voluntarism work.

Lephoi is a non-profit charity rehabilitation centre established by UCCSA church in 1985 to offer learning, caring and support to blind children. ENDS
