Govt loses another vehicle

02 Jul 2018

Yet another government vehicle has been stolen in Letlhakeng, in the wee hours of on June 28 after perpetrators made their way into the Department of Roads’ premises after cutting down the fence.

The incident brings to two, the number of government vehicles stolen in Letlhakeng in six months. The first one, a Toyota Landcruiser, was stolen during the festive season. In an interview, Letlhakeng Police Station Commander, Superintendent Daniel Katse said the suspects, about three in total, made their way to the guard house where they tied up two night watchmen on duty, seized the vehicle’s keys and made away with it.

“Before that, they had broken into the premises of the nearby CTO fuel point where they also tied up the lone watchman, then proceeded to also tie up another at the Food Resources Services premises, just a few metres away. This was probably done so none of the guards could raise alarm,” he said.Supt. Katse said they suspected the thieves were the very same ones that stole the first Landcruiser belonging to the Department of Education in December.

“The mode of operation bears similar hallmarks. The perpetrators seem to have taken their time plotting the whole thing, so we suspect a syndicate with an objective of stealing government vehicles. Unfortunately the vehicle’s tracking device was not functioning so we still have no idea where it headed afterwards, although we suspect it headed towards Gaborone,” he said.

Supt. Katse has appealed to members of the public to help locate the vehicle, which he said did not bear any departmental logo. He also indicated that all the four security guards were not harmed as the thieves did not seem to have any dangerous weapons.

He advised security guards, especially those tasked with manning property in close proximity, to always work in unison when on duty to minimise chances of being attacked. Supt. Katse also pleaded with employers to always equip their security guards with all the necessary work equipment such as security torches. ENDS
