Police warn against cyber-facilitated crimes

Botswana Police Service has warned the public against cyber-facilitated crimes.
A press release from the police says the organisation has recently been inundated with reports of companies and individuals swindled of their money through the use of Internet or social media.
The release states that some of the cyber facilitated crimes that companies and individuals have fallen prey to include change of supplier fraud or false tender invitation where criminals send an email to the customer using the supplier’s compromised email account.
It says criminals also use false tender invitation traits that forge legitimate company logos and addresses and part of the email address domain name.
The release further says the use of social media for false advertisement of houses for rent and auctions as well as impersonating prominent people was widespread.
Police have thus encouraged people to check for correct company email addresses and not use numbers attached to the document in the email invitation to tender.
People are also advised not to make payments to a new bank account through known contact information without verifying with the supplier. ENDS
