Council advocates for political funding

26 Jun 2018

Kgatleng District Council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong has urged government to consider funding political parties.

Speaking during the Kgatleng District full council session which started on June 25, Councillor Morolong said government should consider introducing some political reforms to enhance democracy.

“Political party funding is one such aspect of enhancing our electoral democracy and it is long overdue,” said the council chairperson.

Mr Morolong further said it was evident that the burden of costs for the aspiring candidates for the elections is extremely high as they use their personal resources to drive the democratic processes.

He said by-elections are more expensive than the general elections, hence the need to fund them.

In other matters, he said Kgatleng, like other districts, is experiencing high levels of unemployment among the youth.

Mr Morolong therefore urged councillors to come up with ways to address this challenge.

He suggested that there should be a jobs creation forum where all stakeholders including members of the public should participate.

He also told councillors that in order for them to attract investment in the district, they should boldly decide to review their physical development plan, especially the belt from Mmamashia along A1 highway to Malotwana turn off.

“This zone is strategically suitable for investment and can shape our district landscape and create employment for our people,” said Mr Morolong. BOPA
