Practical subjects crucial in contributing to economy

25 Jun 2018

Practical subjects are crucial to a country as they can assist in developing the social and economic landscape of the country.

That was said by Kweneng Region Practical Subject Fair chairperson, Mr Bolatlheng Mokotedi at Tshegetsang Junior Secondary School in Molepolole on June 23.

Mr Mokotedi stated that practical subjects had an essence of improving the functional ability as well as open opportunities in labour markets.

He also said the ability demonstrated by learners in various practical subjects during the fair showed that the subjects give learners an understanding of the impact of their choices on other people, the economy as well as the environment.

Held under the theme ‘Practical subjects-paving way for multiple pathways in the education sector’, Mr Mokotedi said the theme expressed the importance of the role subjects such as Agriculture, Art, Design and Technology, among others played in facilitating both the social and economic progress of  the country’s economy.

He further said for many years concentration was on the academic aspect of education where Mathematics, Science and English Language were considered a must.

“With multiple pathways, it has been demonstrated that our children are talented and they must be given room to unleash their talents and skills so that they can put food on the table," he said.

For his part, secretary for Ntlo ya Dikgosi, also founder of Motlhaolosa Poetry Assembly, Mr Moroka Moreri said practical subjects could help the youth overcome challenges of unemployment and lack of educational sponsorships.

He challenged learners to take practical subjects seriously and refrain from the habit of prioritising  Sciences and Mathematics only.

Head of department in Pastoral Care, Ms Dibaakanyeng Seboko said the theme for the fair was very relevant as it expressed the value of all practical subjects in facilitating the economic progress of the country.

About 26 secondary schools (both Junior and Senior) in Kweneng region participated in the fair.

The overall winners will proceed to compete at the National Fair where they will compete with other schools from other parts of the country. ENDS
