Sports competitions promote SPEDU region

The mayor of Selebi Phikwe Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa has commended government for holding the Public Service Day Celebrations-Fitness and Sport Competitions in Selebi Phikwe.
He said the event would have apositive impact on the economy of the town and SPEDU region
He told BOPA in an interview on the side lines of the competitions at the Selebi Phikwe Stadium that besides the competitions, the event brought together public servants to meet, chat, mingle and celebrate their role in public service and the impact they have in building this nation.
He said the event promoted unity among civil servants and the nation as a whole. Mr Molosiwa further stated that the sport competitions also promoted living healthy lifestyles and fitness among civil servants.
Regarding the spin-offs of hosting the event, the mayor explained that he was informed that all the hotels, lodges, guest houses in Selebi Phikwe including Mmadinare, Bobonong, Sefhophe and Serule were fully booked.
He said street vendors especially those in Selebi Phikwe also benefitted from the sport competition in that civil servants were able to support their businesses by purchasing food, drinks and air time from the vendors.
Further, he said local restaurants and retailers also reaped in some income.
“We appreciate the fact that government has kept its promise to continue holding major events in our town to boost the local economy,” he said.
More than 2 500 civil servants from 13 district across Botswana took part in the sport and fitness competitions which included football, netball, volley ball, athletics and fun games such as tug of war, orange race, egg race and sack race among other games. ENDS
