A local company, PST Sales & Distribution, has donated sunscreens to police officers who work under severe heat conditions.

The company’s group sales director Mr Sachin Lonial presented 204 sunscreen sprays and moisturisers to the leadership of Botswana Police Service on June 6  at the Office of President.

Mr Lonial explained that the sunscreens would help to shield and protect police officers against sun rays, photo-ageing and overall skin damage.

“PST Sales & Distribution would like to extend their gratitude to the Botswana Police Service for the endless hours of service to the security and welfare of our nation. Many officers spend several hours in the sun and we are aware that this can be harmful and cause damage to the skin,” said Mr Lonial.

Senior private secretary to the President Mr Berzac Maphakwane received the donation on behalf of President Mokgweetsi Masisi and handed them over to the Police Commander Mr Keabetswe Makgope.

Mr Maphakwane said the sunscreens would come in handy for police officers who were usually exposed to harsh weather conditions when carrying out their patrol and traffic management duties.

He said a person who was constantly exposed to the sun faced dangers of skin damage, premature ageing and skin cancer.

“This donation will benefit them since they are constantly exposed to the sun. We believe that it will help to decrease their risk of acquiring these deadly diseases,” he said.

Police Commissioner Mr Keabetswe Makgope said the donation meant a lot to police officers and would motivate them to give the best service to the public.

"We have close to 100 police officers whose duties are just dedicated to traffic management in Gaborone and Francistown. On any given day we have about 70 officers in Gaborone just managing traffic to make sure that people reach their workplaces and go back to their houses, and also to make sure that the business transactions proceed without any impediments,” said the police commissioner.
