KDC makes strides amid challenges

27 May 2018

Kweneng District Council is said to be facing unique challenges.

Council chairperson, Mr Jeffery Sibisibi made the revelation during a media briefing in Molepolole recently.

Mr Sibisibi said the biggest district council in the country is however making strides in realising developments in different parts, one of the most urgent being the development of roads, which surpasses maintenance of schools and water drainage system, among others.

He said strategies were in place to deal with the issues, revealing that they had just completed some road projects in Letlhakeng and have now moved to Gabane.

Mr Sibisibi explained that the council would also concentrate on maintaining facilities such as classroom blocks, toilets and even construction of  teachers houses, adding that most schools in Kweneng needed a facelift.

He also noted that they were grateful to the constituency funding, which he said came at the right time, adding that with eight constituencies in the district, they are working with a budget of P80 million.

He said the council would also use the road levy to purchase graders and other road machinery that would be used to construct and maintain roads in the district.

He further revealed that the council has started erecting tower lights in some areas where there were no street light as they were much cheaper.

Meanwhile, the council secretary, Mr Goleba Kgari accused residents, businesses and companies of not disposing waste correctly.

He said people who had been engaged to collect waste around the district had since halted their services, adding that the council was looking at revisiting the contracts.

Mr Kgari said the council was also faced with a challenge of acquiring suppliers for bricks for construction of internal access roads.

He said there was a high demand for bricks and the suppliers could not meet the demand, adding that  tenders were currently floating. ENDS
