Rape murder accused for psychiatrist review

18 Feb 2018

An investigating officer in a case in which Tefo Moagi is charged with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old former Thebe Primary School pupil has informed the Gaborone Extension II Magistrate Court that the accused should be taken for psychiatrist assessment.

Detective Assistant Superintendent Madziba Duna of Urban Police Station in Gaborone informed magistrate Ms Batho Kgerethwa that Moagi wrote his mother a letter from prison threatening his former girlfriend with murder, a sign which he said clearly showed that the accused was an angry man with intention to kill.

Assistant superintendent Duna said the four-page letter, which he read it in part clearly shows that the accused was on the move to kill his former lover who resides in Ntlhantlhe village.

He said the accused indicated in the letter that he had killed a different person instead of the girlfriend.

Following this development, he requested the court that he be subjected to psychiatrist evaluation and be further detained.

In the previous sitting, the accused informed the court that should he be granted bail he will reside at his grandmother’s house in Mochudi.

However, ASP Duna said he met the accused’s 80-year-old grandmother in Mochudi who said she was fearful of accommodating the accused more so that she was staying alone hence members of the public might attack her if they come to know that she was housing the accused.

Assistant superintendent Duna also visited the accused’s mother in Gaborone who also was reluctant to accommodate Moagi on the same reasons that she feared she might be mobbed and fatally assaulted by angry members of the society as the matter is serious.

Meanwhile, Moagi applied for bail and told the court that should his application be successful, he will stay somewhere in Sikwane and abide by all bail conditions.

In response the prosecutor assistant superintendent Tlotlang Balatlhwa from Broadhurst Police said the court should be mindful of the safety of the accused and those who might house him if granted bail.

Assistant superintendent Balatlhwa therefore said the court should not take a chance but keep him in custody until such a time when it was clear he could be liberated into the society.

The court therefore further detained until March 1, 2018. Ends
