Botswana Police Service (BPS) has recorded 51 deaths during the police end of year operation that ran from December 18, 2017 to January 3, 2018.
A press release from BPS notes that out of the number, 29 deaths were a result of road traffic accidents, whilst 22 were murder cases.
The release further states that statistics indicate that the same number of deaths was registered during the same period last year where 31 of them were as a result of road carnages and 20 resulted from murder.
According to police investigations, most murder cases were as a result of killings related to love affairs and misunderstandings that erupted mostly at drinking places.
The police, the release says have observed a reduction in the total number of fatalities registered from January to December 2017 where 434 lives were lost in road carnages as compared to 450 during the same period in 2016.
The release further notes that on the same breath, an increment was observed in the total number of murder cases as they rocketed from 285 in 2016 to 307 in 2017.
“As a result of these incidents of which a good number of lives are continuously lost due to human behavior, the police would like to call members of the public to change their attitude and show consideration of their lives and that of other people.” ENDS
