Namibian in manslaughter charge pursues bail

A 37-year-old man pleaded with Jwaneng magistrate to grant him bail in a case in which he is accused of causing death by reckless driving.
The Namibian national, Jacobas Gaosab is accused of driving recklessly and causing an accident which killed a 62-year-old man Mr Jan Stegling and injuring his own passenger.
The accident happened on December 7 last year in Kaduwe lands in the morning.
The accused, Gaosab said was desperate to get bail as he was taking care of his wife, children and the entire family since he was the only one who was working back home.
He further said his family members did not even have passports which hamper them from visiting him.
However, the prosecution opposed the bail request saying the accused might use other boarders to escape if he was granted bail.
Other arguments were that it would be inflexible and costly for the prosecution to look for the accused once he was in Namibia.
The prosecution stressed that the investigations were not yet complete and the accused had a greater chance of interfering with evidence since the witness was hospitalised in Namibia.
The prosecution further stated that the accused might be stating reasonable circumstances, but the case was very serious to grant him bail before investigations were complete.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor assured the accused that he would communicate with his employer in Windhoek to see if he could do anything to assist his family.
The accused will appear for mention on January 22. ENDS
