Police investigate rape cases

28 Dec 2017

Selebi Phikwe Police Station Commander, Superintendent Victor Nlebesi says police are investigating three cases of rape that took place on Christmas day in Selebi Phikwe and Mmadinare.

In an interview on Thursday, Superintendent Nlebesi said two cases of rape occurred in Selebi Phikwe at Ikageleng ward in the early hours of Christmas day while one case took place in Mmadinare also in the early hours of Christmas day.

Regarding the rape incident in Selebi Phikwe, Mr Nlebesi said two women were raped by the same person in the same house.

He explained that according to the victims’ statements, the two women arrived at their house in the early hours of the morning from a night out.

He said upon entering their house a man pounced on them, threatened them with a knife, forced them to undress and allegedly raped both of them.

However, he said the suspect has been apprehended and was in police custody.

He further said another rape incident happened in Mmadinare where a woman was allegedly attacked and raped by an unknown perpetrator while on her home from a night out.

He said the culprit was at large and that the police were still on the manhunt for the rapist.

Superintendent Nlebesi urged women to be cautious and vigilant every time they go on a night out and when they get back home.

On other issues, Mr Nlebesi raised concern about people who tended to spend time outside bars and nightclubs after closing time drinking alcohol from their vehicles and playing music.

He said the move was against the law and that people were expected to disperse  from bars or night clubs after closing time.

He said such situations where people become intoxicated outside bars and night clubs gave way to incidents such as fights and murders while some people become a nuisance.

He explained that Selebi Phikwe police had registered two murder cases recently that occurred during such drinking sessions.

He called on Batswana to desist from hanging around bars and night clubs after closure.ENDS
