Urban Police in Bontleng have arrested a middle-aged man who allegedly raped a nine-year-old girl of Thebe Primary School before killing her.

Urban station commander, Superintendent Obapotse Moremi confirmed the incident, saying the girl was found lying dead at White City location, but preliminary police investigations reveal that she was raped before being killed.

Supt Moremi said apparently the mother of the deceased was not at home during the fateful night, but reported the matter to the police the following day after she discovered that the child was missing.

He said following the report of a missing person, another report of a child seen lying dead also came through and the person emerged to be the missing girl.

He said the girl was rushed to Princess Marina Referral Hospital, where she was certified dead.

Meanwhile, Supt Moremi advised parents not to leave children alone at night because rapists take advantage of their absence.

He explained that the police were concerned about parents who left children unattended.

He added that they were investigating a similar case in which a woman is accused of neglecting her children for days.

He therefore urged the public to always make sure that children were safe whenever they left home, especially the girl child.

He said with the current case, there were some people in the same yard and as such the mother could have simply asked them to keep an eye on the children while she was away. ENDS
