Robert Mugabe steps down

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned.
Parliament speaker, Jacob Mudenda, has confirmed that Mr Mugabe voluntarily resigned in a letter submitted to Parliament today to allow smooth transfer of power.
The announcement has halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him.
Mr Mugabe's resignation has left lawmakers and Zimbabweans across the world celebrating in the streets.
Mr Mugabe, 93, had previously refused to resign despite last week's military takeover and days of protests. ENDS
