Entrepreneurs fight poverty

Tonota sub district together with community development and social services committee launched a poverty eradication project and a mini show in Borolong village recently.

Speaking during the event Botswana Building Society bank branch manager, Mr Keleagile Tekanyo said the mini show marked a platform on which entrepreneurs would share best business practices with other Batswana.

The manager said through the poverty eradication programme the government assisted the dormant skilled and passionate micro entrepreneurs to kick start their small businesses.

“Through the poverty eradication programme beneficiaries were assisted as per their needs and this is what we see on display today in different stalls” he said.

The manager remanded exhibitors that competition in business was key therefore it was upon every one of the entrepreneurs that had graced the event to develop strategic mindsets for them to penetrate the market. 

Mr Tekanyo said the purpose of the mini show was for entrepreneurs to network and exhibitors to get the exposure beyond their usual place of business.

“This will not only help you to grow into bigger business rather it will also play a pivotal role in diversifying the country`s economy,” he said.

For her part social welfare officer, Ms Bame Amos said the event targeted small entrepreneurs from villages in the Tonota sub-district which comprised Chadibe, Borolong, Shashe Mooke, Tonota and Natale.

Ms Malebogo Enerst who makes jam from orange, melon and mixed fruits has been attending the events since 2010. She said throughout the exhibition her clients managed to understand her products fully and there has been a good response.

“As a result of the exhibition that has been going on I have managed to open a business  account and soon I want to move from operating from home and join other entrepreneurs in towns” she said.

Mr Mothusi Barobi who is a carpenter said the exhibition has helped him market his products.

 He said he uses Modumela and Morula tress to make his products which mainly comprises of chairs.

 The theme of the mini show was “Micro entrepreneurs, key to poverty eradication”. ENDS
