Fascinators trend at events
05 Nov 2017
Fascinators seem to have made a comeback and have been trending as some women were spotted at various events such as funerals, cocktails and high teas donning them.
Recently there has been some fascinators themed baby showers, bridal showers and cocktail parties.
Prominent personalities in the likes of Assistant Minister, Botlogile Tshireletso, Speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Kokorwe are also fond of donning fascinators.
Fashion guru, Tsholo Dikobe of Khoi-Fro brand, who is popularly known for advocating for individuality, confidence building and creativity through fashion, confirmed the fascinator comeback.
What are fascinators? They are a small cocktail headwear or hair hats that are used to “fascinate,” dazzle an entire outfit or head.
Dikobe said fascinators were hair decorators and used more virtual than functional to make a statement and could transform a simple dress into a fabulous outfit.
Dikobe stated that in essence they were an extension of one’s personality, a virtual short hand of expression.
She said bigger than a barrette, modern fascinators were commonly made with feathers, flowers or beads, which were attached to the hair.
“Whether printed or in a solid colour, a midi dress always looks immaculate paired with a head turning fascinator,” she said.
Dikobe stated that a fascinator looks best when worn to the side or back of the head as it doesn’t block ones face.
“Matching your outfit is not the only way to select a fascinator. You might want to think about suiting your face shape or your hair colour as well,” she said.
She said fascinators could be worn to high profile weddings or funerals, giving an example of the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011, where various female guests arrived wearing fascinators.
She also said they could be worn to unique themed cocktail functions or occasions like national days, high-teas, horse racing events and any red carpet event.
Dikobe stressed that people should not mistake a fascinator for hats.
She said a fascinator was a decoration mounted on a base like a comb, headband, elastic or clip and attached to the head. ENDS
