A 38-year-old man of Sedie ward in Maun has fallen victim to the numerous drowning experienced in Tlhamalakane River on Saturday in Maun.
The man who was swimming in the company of others while carousing at an entertaining spot by the river in Matlapana commonly known as ‘the beach’ drowned at around 5pm, according to Superintendent Samuel Kgomo of Maun Police. The body of the man was
however retrieved on Sunday around 2pm by the police and other law enforcers, he said.
The victim was an employee of Alfa Accommodation in Sedie.
Supt Kgomo said the police have recorded nine deaths due to drowning in their policing area since January, with seven deaths happening in Maun while two were of Shakawe. He advised that the public desist from swimming, especially under the influence of alcohol.
The incident follows the recent drowning of two men while crossing the river from a cattle post to Sexaxa on October 3 in which a 34-year-old man and a 49-year-old man drowned due to a suspected hippo attack.
The body of the 34-year-old was retrieved on the same day while the 49-year-old was retrieved on October 5.
Maun Police are also investigating the murder of a 33-year-old woman of Gweta, who is suspected to have been killed by her boyfriend at Xhinxhwa settlement.
Supt Kgomo said the woman was burnt to ashes and the police were to establish whether the boyfriend killed her before setting her body alight or burnt her to death.
He however said the 37-year -old suspect who is also of Gweta attempted suicide after the deed by consuming a substance that resembled battery acid. Supt Kgomo said the boyfriend, who was in a critical condition was taken to Gweta Clinic and thereafter to Nyangbwe Hospital.
In another incident, a 30-year-old woman of Tsokotsha settlement near Gweta was severely hit on the head by her 34-year-old ex-boyfriend. Supt Kgomo said the victim was also hospitalised at Nyangabwe. ENDS
