Bayport Ghetto Carnival to unify communities
03 Jul 2017
The first Bayport Ghetto Festival is expected to unite communities in and around Francistown through cultural and creative expression.
This was said at a press conference hosted by the carnival organisers in Francistown on jUNE 30.
The carnival organiser, Ngqabutho Khumalo said the goal was to establish the event as a prominent feature on the Francistown entertainment landscape and the national calendar of events.
Khumalo further added that they were hopeful that the festival would attract multitudes of Francistown residents, which would also create business opportunities in the city.
“We noted with concern that the city of Francistown does not have one signature event that includes families, which we can all be proud of. We have seen how certain events have now become permanent markers on our annual calendars, and how they have transformed their host towns or villages. One could mention here the Khawa Dune Challenge, Mascom Derby and the 1000 desert race.”
Francistown city mayor, Sylvia Muzila said the carnival, which is billed for this month, comes at the right time as the city would be celebrating 120 years of existence this year.
“We are a city that wants to develop itself further than what it is now. We have been left behind in terms of developments, and that is where Vision 2022 came about. The vision is a way to improve and develop Francistown,” said Muzila.
She said the ghetto carnival was part of the city’s vision, adding that it was upon Francistown residents and other stakeholders to develop the city just like Bayport was doing through the event.
Giving his keynote address, Bayport executive chairperson, Father Maphongo said it was only natural to give back to the community of Francistown through the event as it has accommodated and supported them as a business.
“We trust that the support we lend to this event will add to the pageantry and excitement, and that the people of Francistown will have the best time possible. The grand old city, pulsating with rhythm and excitement is the perfect place for a carnival.”
A Bayport carnival media release states that the carnival will take place on the 14, 15 and 16 July. It further notes that it will be three days of dancing, arts, parades, kid’s activities and much more.
The focus will be on Botswana’s rich cultural heritage, and the carnival will showcase traditional food, music and clothing as well as the country’s best contemporary artists such as Vee and DJ Colastraw. ENDS
