Teenager falls victim to rapists during outing

09 Jan 2013

Police in Ramotswa are investigating an incident in which an 18-year-old girl was raped by two men during a night outing with her boyfriend.

Ramotswa police station commander, Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse said the incident took place in the periphery of the Disaneng Cemetery.

Supt Gabathuse said the two were attacked by their assailants whilst sitting in their car and were subsequently overpowered. The men fled with the victim and later raped her.

Supt Gabathuse said the suspects were believed to be Batswana, adding that they were yet to make an arrest on the matter. The station commander cautioned members of the public against going to unsecure places at night.

Furthermore, she pointed out that although the area was known for such attacks, the police had not recorded a similar case in the area for over a year. She attributed that to consultations with the public.

She said such attacks happened because people neglected their safety.

“People should feel obliged to take responsibility for their safety and to protect themselves,” Supt Gabothuse said.

On other issues, Supt Gabathuse said they were investigating an incident in which a 71-year-old man of Ramotswa died after being involved in a fight with his 42-year-old relative.

She said the police were awaiting a medical report on the cause of  death before charging the accused.

Supt Gabathuse said the accused could face a murder charge. ENDS
