Janel Gaborone is this year’s Misss June 16, a pageant meant to introduce the day of the African child celebrated on June 16.
The Kgale Hill Junior Secondary School student was flanked by first princess, Amy Lekgetho and second princess, Leone Nokola.
The event was held recently at the Gaborone International School Hall for girls between the ages of 11-15 with the objective to help harness talent in the children enabling them to exploit fully opportunities available in the society.
The city council-sponsored pageant was held under the theme ‘Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunities for Children in Africa by 2030.'
The council’s chief social worker Ms Kebalepile Horatius stated that they were providing a nurturing environment for the full realisation of their (contestants) capability as many never knew what they were capable of until they had made it.
“As much as sports people train to win medals, beauty pageants also train contestants to present themselves to be the best as a beauty pageant runner is supposed to be fluent, charismatic and intelligent,” she said.
Ms Horatius expressed hope the society will help groom, guide and support the children as they were future leaders of the nation and the world was their oyster.
Same walked away P1 000 richer, while her first and second princesses won vouchers worth P750 and P500 respectively.
Miss Public Service Gaborone District 2016 Jessica Morwaeng, Little Miss Princesses of the World 2016 Tshephang Khan and Miss Tshwaraganag 2016 Mamkie Khandala attended the event. ENDS
