Computer virus affects police record bureau

18 May 2017

A state prosecutor from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mr Ernest Mosate has informed Gaborone Village Chief Magistrate that the virus which attacked government computers  recently has made it difficult for the police to retrieve previous convictions of Kealeboga Mogale.

Mr Mosate told magistrate Mompati Taolo on May 17 that the investigating officer was unable to retrieve Mogale’s previous convictions because government computer system was down and will only be able to furnish the court with such information next week after the situation has been normalised.

Mogale, who is accused of stealing P1.9 million whilst employed as senior crewman at Brinks Global Services was due to launch his mitigation immediately after the court was provided with his previous convictions, but due to this untimely development he will have to wait until May 24, 2017.

In the meantime Mogale told the prosecution to hasten up with his previous convictions, noting that the fact that he was now a convict did not automatically mean that the court may sentence him for a custodial sentence.

Last week Mogale told chief magistrate Taolo that he  regreted his actions as he was influenced by the evil spirit to commit the crime.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor Mr Mosate has told the court that the complainant in the matter, Brinks Global Service intended to apply for compensation.

Mogale, who has been on the run after his case was registered with Village court since 2012, admitted all facts as read to him.

He admitted that though he had intended to bring back the money to the rightful owner, he failed to do so.

On May 11, 2012 the accused stole the sum of P1.9 million  at Diamond Technology Park in Gaborone, the money belonging to Brinks Global Service, his employer at the time, having come into his possession on account of his employment.

When the accused was arrested a total of P1.2 million  was recovered from one accomplice Khumo Monyera. ENDS
