01 May 2017

Vice President Mokgweetsi Masisi has commended SARGAM for their good gesture in assisting others.

Masisi said this when presenting a P50 000 cheque to Moshupa YMCA at the Safar Concert, which was organised by SAGAM as a way of celebrating their 25 years on their musical journey.

He said the Moshupa YMCA was a nationally recognised NGO which has made a significant contribution to  public health education, economic empowerment and skills development.

He said the organisation focused on the remote areas as such areas were disadvantaged by amenities and facilities.

“This assistance will go a long way in buying the resources they need for them to fulfill their mandate, and it will help in that regard. On their behalf, I would like to thank you most heartily,” he said.

For his part, the chairperson of SARGAM, Manhar Mooney said the over the past 25 years, the organisation, through the support of the Indian based community and members, had joined forces to take its achievement to greater heights.

“We are inspired by the love we all share for music, the longing for a better tomorrow for Botswana, and the zest and passion that has brought us this far. Together we are unstoppable,” he said.

He further said since the formation of SARGAM they have raised over P3 million, which they have ploughed to organisations such as Holy Cross Hospice, Pudulogong Rehabilitation and Development Centre, Camphill Comminity Trust, the President’s Housing Appeal and Botswana Music Union to mention a few.

Other beneficiaries who were presented cheques amounting to P25 000 included Mafitlhakgosi Traditional Dance group, Anafiki and Malakista and Black Marto, all amounting to a total of P150 000.

SARGAM Trust was established in Botswana as an NGO 25 years ago with the objective of raising funds for deserving charity causes through musical concerts. To date, over P1.6 million has been donated. ENDS
