Court fines corrupt official

Regional Magistrate Court (North) Magistrate Mr Masilo Mathaka recently sentenced a 39-year old man to three years imprisonment wholly suspended, on the condition that he does not commit any corruption related offence within this period.
A news release from DCEC states that the accused person Dick Mavuka, was also fined P7 000 which should be paid on or before April 28, 2017 of which failure to pay will result in him serving a sentence of six months imprisonment.
The release states that Mavuka was charged with one count of Corrupt Transactions with Agents,
The court learnt that the accused, Mavuka, in the period between the August 25 and 28, 2012 at Sowa corruptly gave Mirriam Raborokgwe, an agent of Botswana Ash (Pty) Ltd a valuable consideration in the form of a cheque amounting to P13 500 as an inducement for the aforesaid agent to show favours and prioritise dealings with LCK Marketing whilst performing her duties of procurement at Botswana Ash.
On a related matter, a 44-year old woman was arraigned before Jwaneng Magistrate Court recently charged with four counts of Obtaining by False Pretences.
Investigations conducted by the DCEC revealed that the accused, Keitumetse Itani, on the October 24, 2006 in Jwaneng with the intent to defraud, obtained P5 000 Golden Bridge Enterprises (Pty) Ltd by falsely representing to the said Golden Bridge Enterprises that Thatayaone Lore applied for a loan, when infant the accused person knew at all material times that Lore never applied for a loan as it was the accused who applied for the loan using Lore’s personal details without his consent.
The accused will appear again in court for mention on May 22, 2017. Ms Belinda Oaitse of the DPP appeared for the state while the accused person was unrepresented. ENDS
