DJ Missy to perform in South Africa
21 Feb 2017
A female Disc Jockey (DJ) Mpho Mogomotsi, better known in the music industry as DJ Missy, will join other female heavy weights DJs in the neighbouring South Africa to perform at an event dubbed ‘Cats fight/Battle of Lady DJs’ to be held in the North West Province.
DJ Missy stated in an interview with BOPA that the invitation came about after she was approached by a South African music promoter, Platinum Minds, after watching her perform at one of the local events.
She invited her to join his upcoming, all female DJs events and she gladly accepted.
The all-female DJs festival will feature some of the finest female DJs of South Africa from such reputable music labels like Soul Candy, Fuse Academy and some lady DJs from Motsweding FM.
“The event will provide me with a platform to network and establish my name within the South African music industry market,” DJ Missy said.
The youthful DJ was born 34 years ago in a small village of Makuta, in the North East District and after completing her higher studies at the Zimbabwe College of Secretarial Studies, she came home to set up a modeling agency in
Francistown until she fell in love with deejaying in 2014.
“I met DJ Colastraw, who took me under his wings and enrolled me at his deejaying academy, where I learnt how to mix, how to use sound effects, looping, entertainment business and all the etiquette that goes with playing at corporate events as well as many other valuable lessons to help me stay relevant in the music industry.
That is why I really look up to DJ Colastraw as a mentor. He believed in me when no one else did,” she said.
Her kind of playlist in almost all of her gigs, she revealed, was mainly commercial and deep house music like that of Beat Movement, DJ Rocco and Cairo.
DJ Missy stated that in 2015 she did a collaborative single with a Nigerian muso, Hugo Flow, but the single did not do well because she did not push it hard enough.
She has performed with some of Botswana’s heavy weight DJs in the likes of DJ Guyvos, DJ Bunz, DJ Boza, DJ Fauz, Mr Yummy and DJ Gouveia.
Furthermore, she has performed at some of the biggest events on the northern side of Botswana such as Kanyi ko Zipa, the All white carnival Maun and Nzipo Bakalanga Festival.
DJ Missy is not signed to any record label, but she has a group with DJ Lawless, another female DJ. The group is called Girls on Deck and is signed under Colastraw Records.
The music industry, DJ Missy said, has welcomed her with open arms.
“I am getting so many bookings it is unbelievable for a female DJ beginning in the music industry because so many female DJs gave up early in this industry out of discrimination by their male counterparts.
Some people would want to help us, but in return for sexual favours and that is demoralising,” she said.
Thanks to the other female DJs that she is keeping in touch with around the country like DJ Knight and DJ Sexy Nono, they are able to share ideas on how to deal with such obstacles.
DJ Missy encouraged other females who want to venture into the music industry like her to be more focused, determined to succeed and avoid alcohol abuse as well as wild behaviours, saying by avoiding such pitfalls, they can become successful DJs. BOPA
