12 Feb 2017
Through an array of initiatives among them the President’s Day Competitions, Dibete youth have managed to escape the snares of unemployment.
In an interview, the director of Dibete Theatre Group, Gofaone Kebaeletse said the group gained exposure, popularity and employment through such well-crafted competitions.
Kebaeletse explained that the Dibete-based group was registered as a society in 2012 and consisted of 15 unemployed youth with a passion in theatre.
He said since participating in constituency competitions in 2014, they had managed to scoop position one in the drama category and obtained positions 10 and four in 2015 and 2016 respectively at regional level.
Kebaeletse said the good performance had opened doors for them so much so that companies, government departments and non-governmental organisations had sought their services.
He particularly singled out the Department of Road Transport and Safety for engaging them in the launch of the accident free A1 campaign last year and the National Road Safety Commemoration at Pallaroad in November 2016.
The engagements, he said afforded them attire, stage and office equipment and to pay members allowances.
Other engagements, he said was by Dibete Health Post Health Team to educate community about health issues such as HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse, tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases.
Kebaeletse explained that most of their scripts had a dash of comedy and were prepared based on issues at hand, but not forgetting the group’s objective of promoting culture.
He appreciated community support through donations and encouragement.
He however decried shortage of office equipment and lack of office and the high costs involved in preparing for competitions as challenges, but added that the group was ready to battle it out in this year’s arts competition. ENDS
