Mama Theatre Group put together an attention-grabbing performance presenting a play on anti-poaching of rhinos in Botswana at the Maun main kgotla recently.
Mama Theatre Group director, Mpho Rabotsima said in an interview that the performances are a Kalahari Conservation Society project intended to educate the nation as a whole on the importance of rhinos and anti-poaching measures.
Rabotsima explained that it is a national responsibility to ensure that endangered species, other animals and the environment are protected rather than selling them to foreigners.
He pointed out that rhinos are great natural treasures which are at risk of extinction because of poaching for their horns which are then sold in the black market in other countries such as Vietnam.
Rabotsima also pleaded with the residents to prevent veld fires since they destroy the bush which is habitat to wild animals.
Throughout their performance, the theatre group which hails from Ramotswa, educated residents on how poaching of rhinos affects the environment.
For instance, Rabotsima said rhinos’ dung enriches the soil fertility and its structure ensuring plant growth.
The theatre group showed that life would be difficult for small animals without the large herbivores which often charge through bushes and trees making new paths in search of more plants to eat.
The group illustrated that poaching affected the environment through the depletion of certain animal species especially endangered species thus creating a disruption in the food chain.
For his part Batawana Chief Representative Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe encouraged residents to strive hard to conserve wildlife to prevent extinction of endangered species especially rhinos which have low reproduction.BOPA
