Theatre to curb youth from alcohol drug abuse

Youth in Bobonong are using theatre as a tool to curb themselves from the streets, alcohol and drug abuse.

Home Boys Theatre Productions, a 15-male group based in Bobonong has done a lot to remove youth from streets through theatre.

Chairperson of Home Boys Theatre Productions, Tshepho Molelu said in an interview that the group was formed in 2014, with the aim of helping the young people, who were affected by drug and alcohol abuse.

He said the group used the whole  of 2014 preparing themselves.

Molelu said they started competing in Bobonong constituency drama competitions in 2015 and emerged  the champions.

“Our group won the hearts of the management of Bobonong Department of Health Management Team (DHMT) and they awarded us a tender to perform in their alcohol and drug abuse campaigns,” he said.

He said Home Boys managed to partner with Mandlebe Multi Media Studios and released a movie called Dikgang tsa lorato.

 The movie, he said was about issues that had led youth to kill their partners.

“Our objective of this movie was to sensitive youth about circumstances that lead them into such killings,” he said.

He said their movie had so far sold more than 100 copies and it was still selling even though the sales were going slowly.

Molelu said Home Boys hasd finished shooting their second movie in which they featured a Nigerian actor who is based in Zambia.

He said the movie would be released soon and it would be available in movie stores around the country.

“Our main target is to take Home Boys to greater heights like performing at international theatre competitions like Maitisong annual theatre festival,” he said.

Molelu said Home Boys had a dream to produce a movie that could be played on international television stations.

He further urged youth to use theatre to curb themselves from drugs and alcohol abuse.

Molelu stated that acting was a profession that one could use to put bread on the table like in countries such as South Africa, Nigeria and other places. BOPA
