Kgosi Makgabane Tsiane of Takatokwane has expressed concern over the escalating number of killing of love partners in his village, saying the situation is worrisome as it seems to be regular.Speaking in an interview, Kgosi Tsiane said the rate at which residents of his village, especially the youth are involved in killings of partners is worrisome as it is now becoming part and parcel of the village’s life.
Kgosi Tsiane was saying this in regard to the latest murder attempt and suicide that occured at the village during the festive season, saying the root-cause of such acts is mainly drug and alcohol abuse as many of such unfortunate incidents occur at night during drinking sprees.
“When somebody is drunk they lose conscience and act irresponsibly and that’s why they find themselves involved in such acts,” he said. He said another reason is that people are now too materialistic and enter into relationships solely for material gain such that if they fail to get that, they quit the relationship leaving the other partner heartbroken, and that is how such murders start.
He said the other challenge is that a lot of young people do not open up and share their problems, something he said could assist them in getting help and curtail the potential killings.
Kgosi Tsiane said since he ascended to the leadership of the village five years ago, he has tried to come up with solutions which include among others, monthly prayers against killings of partners as well as meetings held to teach and guide the youth against such killings with the assistance of pastors, social workers and health workers.
Apart from murder of partners, Kgosi Tsiane also expressed concern at the rate at which other criminal activities such as break-ins and stock theft take place, and urged parents to be vocal against such crimes as perpetrators are none other than their own children. BOPA
